Neighboring Ministry

HomeNeighboring Ministry

Welcome to our
Neighboring Ministry!

What does it mean to be a neighbor? What does it mean to love someone as yourself? Can you love someone that you don’t know? At the Sanctuary, neighboring is about fostering connection points between our congregation and our Northside neighbors in order to build authentic and equal relationships.

Matthew 22:37–39: Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  How can you love your neighbor if you never engage in the neighborhood?

There are three main ways Sanctuary engages in the neighborhood: the Haven Pantry, Northside school partnerships, and community-wide events.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Haven Community Food Pantry is located in the Sanctuary Resource Center and offers resources and hospitality to over 200 families a week.  It takes many committed volunteers to operate Haven.  There are weekday and weekend volunteer opportunities for volunteers of all ages.

We partner with Hall Stem Academy, Franklin Middle School, and North High.  We provide resources and volunteers for many school events and sit on each of their site councils so that we can hear concerns directly from teachers and administrators.  We have a heart for Northside students and teachers.

We participate in several all-community events: Juneteenth (June) and Open Streets West Broadway (September).  West Broadway is closed to cars and the whole community comes out for fun, connection, resources, food, and entertainment.  This gives us a chance to build relationships with other community organizations and to show our community some Sanctuary hospitality and love on these special days.  It’s like being part of a community wide family reunion.  You won’t want to miss it.
